Feed contamination crisis rocks, another supply chain risk

Elevated levels of aflatoxins sparked panic in Germany & the Netherlands earlier this month after they were detected in feed maize imported from Serbia. But experts do not think UK feed and food prices will be affected.
In the UK maise accounts for 160,000 tonnes out of 10.2 million tonnes of animal feed consumed.
But Serbia has been criticised heavily for its handling of  the crisis, and particularly for its decision to increase tolerance levels for aflatoxins in milk tenfold in the wake of the crisis. Aflatoxins can build up in the products of animals fed with contaminated feed, with milk particularly vulnerable to contamination.
There is a risk that supplier management and supplier auditing systems may not have enough data to indicate the source of all dairy sub-components within food specifications.
Yet another variable to incorporate into your supplier management programme.
