As a UK food industry person with a geek like interest in food product specifications and how the UK private label food supply chain compares to the US I have always been amazed by some of the food additives which are still permitted to be used in the US.
But I read recently that the FDA is coming under increasing pressure to review its rules for food additives. Current legislation has not been revised in the past 50 years.
Under the current system, companies may request the FDA to assess the safety of a food additive, or submit their own safety assessment results.
As a result there are over 1,000 chemicals with are generally recognised as safe(GRAS)
I know we complain about Europe and the Food Information Regulations (FIR), but I imagine that there could/should be a middle ground.
