UK lags behind in switch to sustainable palm oil.

 

This weeks Grocer, 16th March 2013, reports comments from the roundtable for sustainable palm oil (RSPO) which state that cut-throat competition between British grocers is hampering the UK’s switch to sustainable palm oil.

They state that in these european countries retailers, manufacturers and palm oil refiners are talking to each other and trying to align their requirements.

The RSPO stated that better auditing of palm oil use was vital if viable supply chains were to be established.

It may be that supply chain risk management plans need to take account of this issue although it opens up another level of supplier compliance monitoring to be added to the extensive workloads of already overstretched technical teams and supplier auditors. Also without food specifications software the time taken to identify all raw materials which contain palm oil or its derivatives can be a big task.
