Fairtrade label but not fairtrade cocoa

Last weeks BBC watchdog programme about Fairtrade cocoa managed to spend just over 3 minutes to call into question much of the work that has been done over recent years by chocolate manufacturers to introduce fairtrade cocoa into their ingredient supply chains in a practical and pragmatic fashion. The large cost and logistic challenges of segregating supply chains for commodity items such as Cocoa beans, palm oil etc make it very difficult for the food industry to implement sustainable or ethical products. The cost of a segregated supply chain would make the final foodstuff with ethical or sustainable ingredients prohibitively expensive for consumers. It is disappoining that the BBC did not give enough time to provide a balanced view.
